Departmental funding supports volunteer work in Haiti.
Notes from the field:
Our volunteer efforts included provision of primary care and urgent care services in Port-Au-Prince and Léogâne, an area outlying Port-Au-Prince that was the epicenter of the earthquake. We treated patients in makeshift clinics -- churches, trailers, and even a thatched hut at the beach. We provided education and care for tropical infections, contraception, and chronic diseases such as hypertension. We also managed dehydration and sequelae of the earthquake such as trauma and burns.
As efforts shift toward long-term rebuilding, the need for primary care services is critical. We hope to contribute to the development of a sustainable medical education and primary care infrastructure through ongoing volunteer work.
