Precepting Opportunities

The University of Chicago Department of Family Medicine provides various educational opportunities for our clinical preceptors to best suite their clinical and teaching styles.

For more information or questions about any of our Teaching Opportunities, please contact us!

1st Year Student Longitudinal Program

The Longitudinal Program is a first year educational program that allows students to spend time with a practicing physician and observe the interactions of doctor-patient relationships. The students will learn professional and clinical skills in the traditional classroom setting, and then practice and develop these skills in the real work clinical setting with their mentoring preceptor.

Commitment:

- 1-2 medical students

- Annually December-June, 6 visits for 2-4 hours each

- Students are only available Monday/Wednesday/Friday afternoons

The first part of each session will consist of the students observing their preceptor seeing patients. The second part of each session will be for the students to complete a required assignment, which is usually to practice a clinical skill that was just taught in the clinical skills unit at Pritzker School of Medicine.

The 3rd Year Family Medicine Clerkship is a 4-week rotation in which students work one-on-one in the outpatient setting with community preceptors. Students have didactic sessions on Mondays and work with 1-2 community preceptors during the rest of the week.

-Midrotation feedback and final evaluations (through an online grading)
