Where We Practice

At University of Chicago (NorthShore) Family Medicine Residency, our training takes place primarily in the NorthShore Hospital system. Check out the pages below to learn more about our different training sites.

NorthShore University HealthSystem

Headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) is a comprehensive, fully integrated, healthcare delivery system that serves the Chicago and North Shore region. The system includes four hospitals in Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park and Skokie.

NorthShore continues to be distinguished with numerous awards and honors, including Thomson Reuters "100 Top Hospitals" recognizing leading clinical performance, quality and efficiency and U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals. NorthShore has also earned Magnet designation -- the ultimate credential for high quality nursing.

A national leader in the implementation of innovative technologies, including Epic EMR system, NorthShore was among the first in the country to successfully launch a system-wide EMR, and has been recognized by multiple national organizations and named "most Wired" by Hospitals and Health Networks.

The NorthShore Research Institute focuses on clinical and translational research, including leadership in outcomes research and clinical trials and has been ranked among the top ten in the nation among Comprehensive Independent Research Hospitals in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The integrated health system has significant capabilities in a wide spectrum of clinical programs, including cancer, heart, orthopaedics, high-risk maternity, pediatrics and its NorthShore Neurological and Urological Institutes.

NorthShore serves the culturally-rich and diverse Chicago and north suburban area, which features excellent schools, extensive park district programs and vibrant communities to live in, work in and raise families.

Our Clinics

Glenbrook Family Care Center
The Glenbrook Family Care Center, situated in suburban Cook County, is the primary continuity office for the residency program. Faculty and residents work alongside registered nurses, medical assistants, Geriatricians, and a Psychiatrist to provide comprehensive primary care services to an individual panel of patients. Our patients represent the diversity of our community, speaking English, Spanish, Polish, Korean, Russian, Urdu and a variety of other languages. We serve several underserved communities, including Prospect Heights, Wheeling, and Niles, in areas close to the Glenbrook Hospital campus. Approximately 70% of the resident's patients receive their healthcare benefits through Public Aid. The clinical staff provides approximately 12,000 visits annually. The office utilizes the EPIC electronic health record which is completely integrated for inpatient and outpatient data charting and sharing.

North Shore Health Center
The North Shore Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center of the Lake County Health Department. Located in Highland Park, IL, the Center serves the underserved communities of Lake County. As part of the Maternal-Child and Gynecology rotations, residents staff an antenatal clinic three days per week and a Women's Health referral clinic one day per week. We provide culturally sensitive care to a primarily Spanish-speaking population in this community. As part of the Gynecology rotation, residents perform common procedures including LARC (long acting reversible contraception) placement, endometrial biopsy, and colposcopy, and provide contraception and fertility counseling as well as treatment of common gynecological complaints. As part of the Community Medicine rotation, residents have the opportunity to collaborate with health educators to provide diabetes and exercise education. In 2016, the North Shore Health Center in collaboration with the residency program initiated a CenteringPregnancy© prenatal group visit program.

Communities We Serve

The Glenbrook Family Care Center and the Lake County Health Department (LCHD - Northshore Health Center) are two very distinct clinics where our training residents see their continuity patients throughout their 3 years. The former serves predominately Medicaid patients and the latter is a FHQC site serving both Medicaid and uninsured patients. The Glenbrook Family Care Center is a catchment site for patients in the surrounding community who are on public aid. Our residents currently participate in monthly/bimonthly community talks at the local community center in Highwood including but not limited to diabetes, hypertension, sleep disorders, nutrition, etc.

Community Projects

In an attempt to provide the best possible medical care to our maternity patients at Lake County Health Department NorthShore Health Center, many of whom are Latina immigrants, we initiated a pilot group prenatal program in November, 2015. These group visits are integrated with routine individual prenatal visits, and provide the women with an opportunity to learn from and share with others who are due to deliver around the same time period. We had a total of 11 women participate in this first pilot, 8 of whom attended 2 or more sessions. In the coming academic year, we plan to have 2 groups, each led by one 3rd-year resident and one 2nd-year resident.
Nuestro Centro
Nuestro Centro is a community center in Highwood, that offers after school programming and events for Latino families. Residents offer evening educational sessions here throughout the year. Topics have included stress reduction techniques, treating the common cold, the anti-inflammatory diet, GI health and common complaints, and cancer screening & prevention. This year, proceeds from our annual talent show, "Fam Jam" were donated to Nuestro Centro.
