Biographical Sketch

Dr. Hickner came to The University of Chicago in 2003 after 25 years at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU-CHM) where he was Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Family Practice. He spent the first twenty-two years of his academic career at MSU-CHM developing a rural teaching and research program, the Upper Peninsula Campus. The Upper Peninsula Campus is considered one of the leading rural medical education programs in the United States and continues to enjoy an international reputation.

His primary contribution to academic Family Medicine is the development of several practice-based research networks in the United States that have studied the breadth of family medicine. In recognition of his expertise he was selected to be the founding director of the American Academy of Family Physicians National Research Network in 2000, a position he held until 2004. Since his arrival at UC, Dr. Hickner has worked to develop the research capacity of Access Community Health Network, a large community health center organization with 46 practice sites in the Chicago area. His current research foci are quality, patient safety, and the effects of performance based compensation on the quality of care.

In addition to being a nationally know family medicine researcher, Dr. Hickner is an outstanding clinician and teacher. During his tenure with MSU-CHM he had a very active rural clinical practice including inpatient care and obstetrics. He received Outstanding Faculty Awards at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 1980, 1997 and 2003, and the Arthur Victor Distinguished Faculty Award in Health Care Delivery in 1997.
